C-172 Conversions

Folks, Many people ask about this one, so we're adding a forum for it. Please use this forum to share information and ideas for Cessna 172 taildragger conversions. Alan Quackenbush has a personal web page here at taildraggers.com that has a lot of good information about a conversion he did himself. So check out his web page here under the "Web Pages" section. - Jeff Marken Jul 25, 04 ( post a reply... )

Considering doing a taildragger STC to my 61 172-C model, Is there any adverse effect to doing this on a 172 with the slant tail vs. a straight tail? Any and all comments welcome. Thanx, Greg V. - Greg Varner Aug 24, 05 ( post a reply... )

I once had a student who owned a 62' 172 that had been converted to tail wheel. It was a beautiful airplane with an amazing panel and a 210 hp Continental engine. It was quite an airplane. However, when he would land he was constantly on the brakes during the roll out. I tried to correct him on this as I was concerned it might get him in trouble. He told me that he needed to use the brakes for directional control. I then flew the plane around the pattern myself and found that he was correct. It did't seem like it had enough rudder authority when it slowed down on the landing roll out. It was easier to keep it straight if you used just a touch of brake after the rudder was fully deflected. I am guessing that this was due to the swept tail as I have flown a 170 and 180 and neither had directional control problems. The airplane was not dangerous, it just required a little finess. - Rodgers Bert Jan 22, 06 ( post a reply... )

Hey Greg, I just bought a 1961 c-172 and want to do the texas conversion on it, but I can not find the phone number for the company that sells the conversion. If you know the number could you please email to me. Thank you. Ed M. wingman2@tampabay.rr.com - Ed Mauldin Jan 02, 06 ( post a reply... )

If you already own the Lark I won't give my opinion of that ship. If you aren't starting out with a "wreck", you should forget it. The cradle and gear box area are worlds apart. The tail cone is lots different too but not such a stretch to fab. Find yourself a rebuildable '57 - '59 172 and you will be miles up the road. You may even luck out on some early '57 that might possibly have gear box bulkheads already there. And there are STCs for converting the Cessnas but none for the Lark. - Gary Hanson Jun 04, 08 ( post a reply... )

Hi all, I'm going to convert a RockWell Commander Lark in to a tail dragger, the tail structure is basically almost identical to a C-172. I reaching out to people on the net, trying to get some info on how Cessna does this. I'm interested as to how it's done on the C-172 tail dragger conversion or even the C-180. Any info such as pictures, drawings, stinger or spring would vey much be appreciated. Thanks John jwillis@mts.net - John Willis - John Willis Sep 17, 04 ( post a reply... )
