T-Wheel Shimmy-Help!

Ah! Much Better! I think it may need a little more grease on the kingpin, but there is no shimmey. I did put on a new tire while I had it apart, so that might make some difference. - Bruce Sdunek Aug 07, 07 ( post a reply... )

I have a C-150/150 which I converted to a tailwheel about 8 years ago. Using a Maule "Tundra" tailwheel I've always had minor shimmy problems. Seems to be much worse the last few months. I've adjusted all the angles, balanced the wheel, etc. Everything I can think of. Usually the shimmy has been initiated by landing the airplane heavy and maybe a little hard. Lately it can happen any time. Made a flawless landing yesterday, calm air, smooth runway, and as the airplane slowed down on the roll out the tailwheel went crazy around (my guess) 20-25 mph...at which speed there's not enough elevator authority to ease the weight on the wheel. On the next TAKEOFF, same conditions, did same thing up around that speed. I believe I could cure this problem with a Scott 3200 but can't see my way clear to write the $800+ check right now. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Thanks. - Dan Meler Aug 29, 04 ( post a reply... )

Through three tail wheel champs over the years I have found that if the vertical swivel shaft angle is slightly over vertical ( accomplished by greater spring bend or an angled wedge between the spring and tail wheel) no shimmy problems seam to occur. When there is a rear passenger or downward elevator force the spring and shaft angle changes from when it is sitting. By over compensating for the spring straightening on landing the shaft will be vertical when under landing conditions. - Michael Quindazzi Dec 21, 04 ( post a reply... )

Dan: FWIW...I have a Scott tailwheel on my Citabria and I agree with the comments from Michael Quindazzi and Jeff Marken relative to the spring adjustment and the grease issue. I experienced the tail shimmy soon after acquiring my plane about 3 years ago and adjusted the spring and maintenanced the lubrication appropriately and have not had any problems since. - Walter Lentz Jun 15, 05 ( post a reply... )

THe angle is definitely important...but also, Cessnas with Scott tailwheels shimmy if they have too much grease in them. Most folks pump in the grease until it comes out, which is normal for most things you grease, but a Scott tailwheel should just have a little. If you take it apart and clean it - just dab a tiny bit of grease on with your finger, or just give it a pump or two, that's all you need, and your shimmy problems will be gone. At least this is the case for the Cessna 170 and 180. - Jeff Marken Feb 16, 05 ( post a reply... )

That's interesting! Maybe it makes them too free. Mine has been fine until my last annual. They pumped it so full of grease it's all over the outside. I think I'll clean it out and try just enough to lubricate things. Thanks for the advice. - Bruce Sdunek Jul 07, 07 ( post a reply... )

Had a 152/150 years back. Same problem. I had the hard tire so I changed to a Scott 3200. Problem was solved for 2 years and the same thing happened. If your tire is inflatable, put 45 PSI in it and try again. The Scott people told me that the less rubber on the runway, the less it has a change to shimmy. It worked. By the way, I came across 2 scott 3200's when I built my Hatz. If you need one that has just been reconditioned, let me know. Good Luck. Bill, Do you still have a available Scott 3200 tailwheel? If so, what do you want for it? Regards, Mike Kelly - Mike Kelly Aug 25, 07 ( post a reply... )
