Crosswinds and Flaps

How much xwind are you talking about? When you have ten knots verses 20kts it is a different ball game. With a lot of wind ground speed is much lower and there is not necessarily a need for a slow speed.I have landed with so much wind the airplane will fly if on the ground in tail low position and any flaps. A wheel landing allows you to put the airplane on the ground feel out the situation and leave if you don't like the controlablity. Have landed Valentine, Neb. with 49 kts 30 degrees to the right and taxied accross the infield with tail up on its own, out of the wind behind a hangar. C180. Rapid City, SD runway 32 wind 010 at 19 gusts to 26. Taper Wing Waco. The tower failed to give me an up date on wind change, speed and direction It takes a lot of planning and forthought and you better do it before you get there! - Robert Patrick Feb 24, 07 ( post a reply... )

FWIW – I used to have a C-170 and didn't use flaps in a crosswind as they seemed to aggravate things in that airplane, but in my current airplane, a C-180, I use full flaps like any other landing - I like the slower touchdown speed – wheel landing or otherwise. Each airplane is different; there are no absolutes. I don’t prefer one landing type over the other in a crosswind in the 180 either (but did prefer the 3-point landing in the 170 in a crosswind). I can and do alternate landing types even in crosswinds – either is fine as long as you’re straight when you touch. - Jeff Marken Jun 07, 05 ( post a reply... )

Thanks Jeff, I will practice three-point and wheel landings with and without flaps (crosswinds) in my Citabria. Straight when you touch is the key. - Roger Brown Jun 30, 05 ( post a reply... )

I was taught in a 172 to keep full flaps and set down as slow as possible in crosswinds (speed adjusted for gusts). I was taught in my Citabria to come in faster and less flaps to a wheel landing. Many I have talked to like to use less flaps in a crosswind landing. Is there scientific proof for this option? Roger - Roger Brown Mar 11, 05 ( post a reply... )

I beg to differ on the Citabria. Citabria's completely run out of aileron control at very slow airspeeds. That is why other folks have suggested to keep your speed up in a crosswind. A few years ago, I ran off a runway in a stiff crosswind in a Citabria, but nothing was damaged except my pride. I am no newby either, with at least 3000 hours tailwheel time, and at least 7500 total. Mike in NC - Mike Kelly May 08, 06 ( post a reply... )
