Piper PA20 purchase

I am looking at purchasing a 1950 Piper Pacer but am a relatively new pilot with only got 90 hours total time. This one has been "Metalized" and has the wider landing gear package on it. I have zero time in a taildragger and have heard that this particular model can get squirrely (by a pilot with only a little tailwheel time). Any advice (like run for your life or be prepared for the time of your life) for the newbie here? - Robert Shuey Aug 17, 08 ( post a reply... )

For anybody purchasing a tailwheel plane of any kind, needs to find the right instructor. I have seen many instructors with TW endorsments send many students through the tulips. If you find the right instructor you can learn to safely fly any plane. As far as pacers go, I own a '59 converted model and I think it is pretty mild. I am a ex-spray pilot so most my time is in tailwheel aircraft, but in a extreme crosswind I would take the Pacer over about anything, it is a little squirly compared to most tw planes, but that will save you in extreme situations, I would take a trickier plane anyday over a plane like a champ or cub. I know 4 pilots that learned to fly in Pacers and they can get in anything and go, so I would say go for it, just find a good tw instructor for those first few exciting T.O. and Landings. Good luck - Mike Sterling Oct 13, 08 ( post a reply... )
