Piper built only about 700 Clipper's in Model year 1949. N5616H has a flywheel that has a foundry date of 1946 cast into it. The Clipper came from the factory with an empty weight of 850 and a max gross of 1650. Thus it was able to lift almost it's own weight on 108 HP from the Lycoming O-235-C1. [115HP @2800RPM] That is pretty efficient. Not many more modern designs can equal that. In fact when compared with a late model C-172 one thinks we have not advanced very much in the last 50 years.
